Rooted in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri, Belles of Blue is a dynamic, female-led bluegrass group founded by sisters Nancy Decker and Dollie Slayton, whose musical journey began in their family’s gospel bluegrass band, touring the Midwest and performing at revivals and regional festivals. Now based in Kentucky, the group delivers a powerful blend of bluegrass and bluegrass gospel with compelling original songs, rich harmonies, and musicianship that captivates audiences from the first note.
Written by founding sisters Dollie Slayton and Nancy Decker, “Black Heart” is an intimate and unflinching anthem of survival and strength. The song was born from a deeply personal chapter in Dollie’s life—one marked by heartbreak, upheaval, and the courage to start over. With the help of her sister and mentor, Nancy, the two completed a powerful piece that turns pain into purpose, shedding light on what it means to rise above the darkness.
“Music is healing. I began writing the verses to Black Heart after I narrowly escaped a terrible domestic violence situation. I left Missouri in the dead of night, fleeing to Kentucky. Heart broken, life shattered, I began to pick up the pieces one lyric at a time. I needed a few more lines to make the song complete, so I turned to my mentor, and sister Nancy Decker who finished co-writing the song with me. No longer a victim, I overcame the darkness, and together Nancy and I shed light on a Black Heart.” - Dollie Slayton
